"Pest control" or "exterminator"? Write for the words people search

Homeowners search both words every month. How to set up your Google profile, pages and plan details so search engines and AI tools match you to the job.

You call it pest control. Plenty of your customers call it the exterminator. Both words bring real searches every month, and a company that only uses one can miss people who use the other.

Google’s ad data shows about 165,000 searches a month in the U.S. for “pest control near me.” It shows about 90,500 for “exterminator near me.” That second word brings in a lot of searches too.

People also search for the problem itself. Someone with ants in the kitchen may type “ant control” before they ever type “pest control.”

Set up your Google profile

Pick one specific main category. Google says to choose the primary category that best describes your business, and to be specific. It also says not to pick a category for every service you offer.

List your services in plain words. Add each service you really provide, using the words customers use: ant control, rodent control, termite inspections, quarterly home plans and so on.

Set your service area. If customers do not visit your office, Google says to hide your address. Keep the area within about two hours of driving from where you are based. Matching it to your real routes keeps the calls inside the area you can serve.

Build pages people and search engines understand

Give each pest you handle its own page, and name the towns on your routes. On each page, cover:

  • What you handle: the pest and the kinds of places you serve
  • Where you go: towns, counties or ZIP codes
  • How a visit works: what the first visit includes and what happens next
  • How your plans work: how often you come back and what the plan covers

Use both words, pest control and exterminator, where they read naturally. Do not stuff them in.

Explain plans the way homeowners are told to ask

The National Pest Management Association tells homeowners that if a guarantee is given, they should know what it covers, how long it lasts and what they must do to keep it in force. The National Pesticide Information Center suggests asking whether a company requires a long-term contract, and whether it can give an estimate in writing.

Answer those questions on your site, in plain words, before anyone asks. Clear plan terms help a careful buyer say yes.

Keep claims about services, not products

Write about what you do, where you go and how your plans work. Leave product names, treatment claims and safety promises off your marketing pages. Rules differ from state to state, so check what yours allow before you publish anything about licensing or treatments.

Get ready for AI questions

In BrightLocal’s 2026 research, 45% of consumers said they had used AI tools for local business recommendations. When someone asks an AI tool who handles mice nearby, clear pages and matching listings give it true facts about your company to work with.

Your checklist

  • One specific primary category on your Google profile
  • Services listed in the words customers use
  • A service area that matches your routes
  • A page for each pest you handle, with your towns
  • Both “pest control” and “exterminator” used naturally
  • Plan terms, guarantees and written estimates explained in plain words
  • No product, treatment or safety claims in your marketing
